In case you were wondering...

Homecoming Committee is a club organized to put together many different aspects of the time we all look forward to in our fall semester at Bloomsburg University, thats right, you guessed it, Homecoming. The Homecoming committee has a very important role in our school because they are in charge of the ordering of flowers for those on the Homecoming court, the calling of all of the nominees in the Homecoming Committee to remind them of their photos that must be taken, as well as contacting multiple businesses, contacting other members in our Bloomsburg University community, the ordering of plaques, and the list just goes on and on. The Homecoming Committee is a very fun club to be involved in, but it also a very important club as well.

In order to get a good perspective on different clubs offered to students at Bloomsburg University, I decided to observe students in a club that I am a part of, the Homecoming Committee
  • A lot of people attended the meeting (about 30 people).
  • Presidents of the club are very interested in talking to the students
  • All of the students at the meeting are very interested in the meeting
  • Many people participated during the meeting- offering their opinions
  • There was an advisor to watch over the meeting to help answer more questions to guide the presidents in directing the meeting
  • A lot of students at the meeting get excited about the events
  • Students offer a lot of their opinions towards what the presidents of the club have to say about upcoming events
  • A majority of the students at the meeting volunteered to participate in an activity offered
  • Some students used their phones during the meeting to check the time, add events to their phone, etc.
  • Four students left the meeting early

After the meeting I decided to stick around to see why students participated in this club….

Student one (President)
  • Thought it would be fun
  • Past high school experience with organizing homecoming
  • Enjoys school spirit
  • Likes to be in charge

Student two (President)
  • Looks good on resume
  • Thought it would be fun
  • Was in the club in the previous year so thought it would be fun to be incharge
  • Likes to be involved ("keeps her sane")

Student three
  • Member in high school so wanted to see if it was any different
  • Great way to meet people

Student four
  • Sounded fun
  • Doesn't take up a lot of time

What does the data you collect suggest to you about college life?Looking at my observations as well as my interviews with students I found that college students are excited and very into the clubs that they are in. There are students that hold positions as a president of the club which takes a lot of time and patience, but these students are also the ones that I interviewed who love to be in charge. Students dedicate between 1-2 hours just to attend club meetings according to prior time diaries in previous data. This really shows to me that students not only have time to go to classes, go to the gym, or possibly go to work, but also time to volunteer their time for club meetings as well as club activities. Though students could be stressed over school, it is almost like students use the clubs as their stress reliever. It is a time to open up with other students, have fun, but it is also a good way to stand out to employers on resumes.
